COVID-19 BETA EDUCATION PLAN

Schools are required to comply with the Governor’s executive order regarding the wearing of masks. In addition to the Governor’s executive order, TEA has provided school districts with guidance that can require the use of masks or face shields for adults or students for whom it is developmentally appropriate.

The following protocols are in effect through the end of the 9-week grading period.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance policies from our handbook apply to both virtual and in-school scholars. Please be sure to adhere to attendance policies.

COVID-19 SYMPTOMS FOR SCREENING

For the health and safety of all students and staff-parents are required to assist their children with a daily self-screening for COVID-19 symptoms and fever before arriving to school.

Per TEA, “In evaluating whether an individual has symptoms consistent with COVID-19, consider the following questions: Have they recently begun experiencing any of the following in a way that is not normal for them?”

Cough

Chills

Muscle pain

Sore throat

Diarrhea

Known close contact with a person who is lab confirmed to have COVID-19. Note: Close contact is determined by an appropriate public health agency. For clarity, close contact is defined as: a. being directly exposed to infectious secretions (e.g., being coughed on while not wearing a mask or face shield); or b. being within 6 feet for a cumulative duration of 15 minutes, while not wearing a mask or face shield.

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Repeated shaking with chills

Headache

Loss of taste or smell

Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit

RETURN TO SCHOOL: INSTRUCTIONAL OPTIONS

Governor Abbott has directed school districts to re-open for in-person instruction this fall, as well offer parents the option for virtual instruction. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) further mandated that in-person instruction follow a Monday through Friday schedule. Beta will offer in-person learning with multiple safety protocols and COVID-19 prevention measures and a virtual learning option.

FACE TO FACE (IN PERSON) LEARNING

The "in person learning" model is close to the traditional model where scholars attend school at their assigned campus each day in full uniform following a normal schedule.

Although there are no strategies to completely eliminate transmission risk in schools, we are committed to keeping transmission as low as possible in order to safely continue school. Beta Academy will be implementing many safety procedures aligned with CDC and TEA guidance including: frequent hand washing opportunities for scholars and staff, a mask requirement for scholars (2nd grade and up) and staff to have a face shield and/or mask requirements, lunch period in homeroom, teachers switching classes rather than scholars (when possible), school cleaning procedures, social distancing including desks 6+ feet apart (when possible), self-screening procedures for staff and scholars, and minimizing use of shared supplies/materials.

Scholars assigned to an in person learning class will be able to temporarily transition to virtual learning due to COVID-19 infections or possible exposure.

ONLINE VIRTUAL LEARNING

The "virtual learning" model will include live (synchronous) classes on a schedule for most major subjects (varies by grade) as well as do-at-your-own-pace by the deadline (asynchronous) lessons for certain subjects and enrichment/elective classes. We will use two major platforms for our virtual learning: Google Classroom and Zoom.

This model will require significant buy in and support from parents who will serve as a "learning coach" for their scholars. As with in person learning, scholars will be responsible for any and all work assigned by their teacher(s). This work will be graded and will determine the passing and failing of their specific grade level/courses. Please know that grades will count and promotional requirements outlined in the handbook will be used to determine promotion at the end of the year. Additionally, daily attendance will be taken, which will also factor into the promotion of your scholar at the end of the year.

CAFETERIA AND FOOD SERVICES

To minimize possible outside exposure and to allow for adequate physical distancing for students during meal times.

Beta Nutrition & Food Service Protocols:

Beta staff will use face shields, facial coverings and gloves when performing job responsibilities and are trained to practice health hygiene regulations.

Cafeterias will be cleaned and disinfected daily.

Serving and eating areas are cleaned between uses.

Signage will be located in cafeterias and classrooms to reinforce social distancing.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

All of our staff and teachers are required to complete a training on the trauma-informed classroom by September 1st to prepare on how to best support our scholars during this unprecedented time.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Our campus will continue to practice safety protocols that have been established at our campuses and online.

For all on campus safety procedures, please refer to our parent scholar handbook posted under the “print documents” tab.

For live online safety, all teachers will host a password protected Zoom meeting with the waiting room enabled to ensure that only identified scholars can enter once they have their first and last name as their sign in name.

CLEANING PRACTICES

Campuses will be cleaned throughout the instructional day with an emphasis on cleaning high traffic and multiple touch areas, including door handles, restrooms, large group transition areas, cafeteria between meals.

Hand sanitizer stations are located in multiple areas throughout the campus.

Frequent hand washing opportunities will be provided throughout the day.

OTHER OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

Campuses will plan for additional entry and exit time procedures that reduce the number of students and parents congregating outside and/or mixing in the hallways.

Beta will consider staggering school start and end times, assigning students to entries to ensure even distribution of students entering/exiting at each door, providing guidance to students to enter one at a time, and encouraging parents to remain outside during drop-off and pick-up.
